The Islamic giving cycle

Every fund, kept where it belongs.

Zakat is not a designation field. In iCHARMS each form of giving is its own restricted fund — ledgered, reported and Gift-Aid-handled correctly.

Zakatزكاة
Restriction & ledger
Restricted — its own ledger, kept strictly separate from general funds and spent only on eligible categories.
Reporting
Standalone Zakat fund statement; distribution reported by category.
Gift Aid / GASDS
Declaration captured per donor; not all Zakat is Gift Aid eligible — flagged automatically.
Sadaqahصدقة
Restriction & ledger
General or restricted by appeal; allocated to the cause the donor chose.
Reporting
Reported by appeal and campaign, rolled up to the cause.
Gift Aid / GASDS
Gift Aid claimed on eligible declarations, submitted to HMRC.
Sadaqah Jariyahصدقة جارية
Restriction & ledger
Restricted to ongoing projects (water, masjids, education) with milestone tracking.
Reporting
Project-level reporting with milestone disbursements.
Gift Aid / GASDS
Gift Aid where eligible; recurring gifts tracked over time.
Lillahلله
Restriction & ledger
Unrestricted for the cause of Allah — usable where Zakat cannot be spent.
Reporting
Reported separately so trustees see Zakat vs Lillah coverage.
Gift Aid / GASDS
Gift Aid claimed on eligible declarations.
Qurbaniقربانی
Restriction & ledger
Seasonal restricted fund with shares, country allocation and distribution evidence.
Reporting
Per-season report: shares sold, countries served, evidence attached.
Gift Aid / GASDS
Generally not Gift Aid eligible — flagged so it is never over-claimed.

Eligibility shown is indicative — iCHARMS flags Gift Aid and GASDS treatment per fund so claims are never over- or under-stated.

Sector challenges

What's actually hard here.

A decade in this sector means we've shipped against — and solved — most of these. The patterns repeat.

alwahabfoundation.org
Alwahab Foundation — a live UK Islamic charity website we designed and built
A live Islamic charity we build and run — Zakat, Sadaqah and Gift Aid handled end-to-end.
01

Zakat and Sadaqah aren't designation fields

Zakat must be tracked separately from Sadaqah, Sadaqah Jariyah, Lillah and Qurbani — each as a restricted fund with its own ledger and report. Generic CRMs lump them together; iCHARMS treats them as first-class.

02

Sponsorships are long-running relationships

Orphan and family sponsorships span years and need approvals, expiries, beneficiary profiles, bulk letters and Direct Debit renewals — not a one-off donation form.

03

Seasonal spikes at Ramadan and Qurbani

Donation volumes can rise 5–10× in Ramadan. Capture, allocation, receipts and Gift Aid all have to scale without your team scaling with them.

04

Gift Aid recovery is often left on the table

Islamic-charity donors are highly Gift Aid eligible, but declaration coverage is frequently low. Being HMRC-listed, iCHARMS captures declarations and claims — including GASDS on cash — directly.

05

Bilingual donors and trustees

English, Urdu and Arabic content and admin matter in this sector, alongside reporting trustees can actually read.

The platform built around the giving cycle

Zakat, Sadaqah, Qurbani and orphan sponsorship are first-class workflows in iCHARMS — not designation fields bolted onto a generic CRM. One platform runs donors, donations, Gift Aid and programmes, and scales through the Ramadan spike.

  • Zakat, Sadaqah, Qurbani & Lillah as restricted funds
  • Orphan & beneficiary sponsorships, end-to-end
  • Gift Aid + GASDS submitted straight to HMRC
  • Donation portal for one-off, recurring & appeal giving

Gift Aid & GASDS

The 25% your donors are entitled to.

Islamic-charity donors are highly Gift Aid eligible, yet declaration coverage is often low. As an HMRC-listed supplier, iCHARMS captures, verifies and claims — and knows which gifts to exclude.

What we capture & claim

Recovered, not left on the table.

  • Gift Aid declarations captured against each donor record
  • Eligibility flagged automatically (Zakat / Qurbani excluded)
  • One-click claim submission as an HMRC-listed supplier
  • GASDS on cash & contactless collections under the threshold
  • Recurring & sponsorship gifts claimed across years
  • Audit-ready claim history for trustees and HMRC
Orphan & family sponsorship

A relationship, not a one-off form.

Sponsorships run for years. iCHARMS holds the whole lifecycle so no child quietly loses support.

iCHARMS vs a generic CRM

Built for Islamic giving — not retrofitted.

Most CRMs are adapted from US or generic non-profit products. Here's what that costs an Islamic charity.

Ready before the moon is sighted

Ramadan and Qurbani can lift donation volumes 5–10× in days. We go live ahead of the season so capture, allocation, receipts and Gift Aid all absorb the spike — appeal pages, recurring giving and live donation tickers included.

The platform, in full

Software built around the Islamic giving cycle.

Most charity CRMs are retrofitted from US or generic non-profit products, then asked to handle Zakat as an afterthought. iCHARMS is built the other way round.

The platform behind

  • Alwahab Foundation
  • Al-Baraka Welfare Trust
  • Alauddin Siddique Trust
  • Hope Foundation
  • Edhi Foundation UK
  • Zobia Nazley Memorial Trust

Organisations that retained us across the full decade — not a single project.

Every fund, first-class

Zakat, Sadaqah, Sadaqah Jariyah, Lillah and Qurbani are first-class restricted funds, each with its own ledger and report — so a single gift is captured, allocated to the right cause, receipted and claimed for Gift Aid in one flow.

Gift Aid & GASDS, straight to HMRC

As a listed supplier on the gov.uk Charities Online register, declarations are captured against the donor, verified and submitted to HMRC in one workflow — with GASDS on small cash and contactless collections. The fastest route to the 25% uplift donors are entitled to.

Sponsorships, programmes & accounting

Orphan and beneficiary sponsorships run end-to-end — approvals, expiries, profiles, bulk letters and renewals. Multi-country programmes reconcile to one cashbook, and the one-click Xero integration flows donations, Gift Aid and fund balances into trustee-ready accounts — no double entry.

Built for the Ramadan & Qurbani spike

When the season arrives, the same platform absorbs the surge: a donation portal for one-off, recurring and appeal-specific giving, campaign pages, and reporting that holds up under audit.

Sector FAQ

Questions we hear often.

Does the donation portal capture Gift Aid at checkout?
Yes. A Gift Aid declaration is built into the checkout flow itself, captured against the donation and synced to iCHARMS — so the claim is ready to submit to HMRC with no extra admin. Islamic donation types such as Zakat, Sadaqah and Qurbani are handled as their own funds, with Gift Aid applied only where it is eligible.
What payment methods can a charity donation portal accept?
Our donation portals accept Stripe, PayPal Giving Fund and GoCardless, plus Apple Pay and Google Pay for one-tap mobile giving and Direct Debit for recurring donations. Every donation — one-off, recurring, Zakat, Sadaqah or appeal-specific — flows straight into iCHARMS with its donor, fund and Gift Aid status, and on into Xero for accounting.
What does it mean that iCHARMS is HMRC-listed?
HMRC publishes an official list of software products approved to submit Gift Aid claims via Charities Online. iCHARMS appears on that list, which means HMRC has tested and recognised our submission format. For trustees this is a useful third-party signal of compliance and reduces risk during audits and inspections.
How does iCHARMS compare to other charity CRMs like Donorfy, Beacon or Salesforce NPSP?
iCHARMS is purpose-built for UK charities that need donor management, online donations and Gift Aid in one place, with single-click HMRC submission included. Compared with general-purpose platforms like Salesforce NPSP, the learning curve is shorter and the UK-specific workflows are pre-built. Compared with other UK CRMs, iCHARMS bundles donation portal and Gift Aid more tightly. The right choice depends on your data volume, integrations and team size.
Does iCHARMS integrate with accounting software like Xero?
Yes. iCHARMS has a built-in, one-click integration with Xero. Donations, Gift Aid and fund balances sync straight from iCHARMS into Xero, giving your finance team a complete, reconciled set of charity accounts without double entry or exporting spreadsheets. It means your fundraising system and your accounts stay in step all year round — not just at month-end.
Can a mosque claim Gift Aid and GASDS through iCHARMS?
Yes. iCHARMS is HMRC-listed for Charities Online submission, so a masjid can claim Gift Aid on declared donations and GASDS (the Gift Aid Small Donations Scheme) on small cash and contactless collections under the threshold, with community-building eligibility tracked per site. Declarations are stored against the donor record, and claims are generated and submitted directly to HMRC.
What can mosque management software do for a UK masjid?
iCHARMS gives a working masjid a single platform for the things that usually live in spreadsheets and cash tins: a household and member registry, Jumuah and weekly collections across cash, card and standing order, building-fund pledges, Madrasah and programme income, and Gift Aid claims to HMRC. Trustees get one reconciled ledger and trustee-ready reports, and donations can sync to Xero for full accounts.
How does iCHARMS track restricted funds for relief appeals?
Each appeal or country programme is a restricted fund with its own ledger in iCHARMS. Donations, allocations, vendor invoices and disbursements all roll up by fund, so trustees and donors can see exactly what was raised and how it was spent — audit-grade, and exportable for finance or onward sync to Xero.
